President’s Message 2021

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It has been quite a while since I was afforded the honour of becoming your Bowls Cornwall President, and as you are all well aware COVID 19 completely wiped out our 2020 bowls season and may continue to have an impact for sometime to come.

Bowls Cornwall has followed Bowls England’s example and retained the 2020 officials for this 2021 season.

I look forward to working with Senior Vice President Mariota McPherson, Immediate Past President Jennie Maunder and all the executive committee members.

Finally, I wish everyone an enjoyable and safe season of bowling and I look forward to visiting as many clubs as possible and most importantly meeting my fellow bowlers on and off the green, you will all have a warm welcome at my club St Stephen in Brannel.

Best wishes

John

BOWLS’ BIG WEEKEND TO SHOWCASE ‘SPORT FOR ALL

Taking place over the Spring Bank Holiday of the 2021 season (Friday 28th to Monday 31st May), Bowls’ Big Weekend is a national initiative offering clubs the opportunity to promote our welcoming and socially-distanced sport and attract new members.

We know that 20% of new bowlers join our sport on the back of open weekends, that our clubs want support to help recruit new players and that there are plenty of people out there who would love to have a go at bowls.

Bowls’ Big Weekend is open to clubs affiliated to Bowls England and British Crown Green Bowling Association, and is being run alongside the Bowls Development Alliance and Disability Bowls England. It takes place over the four-day period allowing clubs to organise activity that best fits within their club’s calendar and complies with Return to Play guidance.

Affiliated clubs who sign up will be able to access FREE resources, including bowls-specific workshops to help run a great event and grow your club. In addition, publicity material and creative resources for social media channels, websites and within your local community will be made available. It will be supported by a national marketing campaign to help raise awareness of the events across the country, and some clubs will get a visit from an England Commonwealth Games Squad bowler.

To ensure that you are the first to receive notification when new material is available, as well as being on our exclusive mailing list for workshops where numbers are strictly limited, sign-up here.

Disability Bowls

On Saturday the 14th March, at Honiton Bowling Club, Disability Bowls England, held their inter-club triples competition. Dunheved Bowling Club, sent a triple to take part, Dave Bowyer, Troy Hair, Fred Bramham. This year Dunheved was the only Cornish Triple to take part, the first time in the club’s history. Clubs also attending were 3 Teams from Plymouth Life Centre, 2 Teams from Taunton Dean I B C, Honiton I B C, Dawlish B C.

Bowls England Organiser Mo Monkton, said this was a very successful event, in challenging times, and all at Honiton should be applauded for the extra work involved, especially during the Coronavirus situation. Dunheved triple enjoyed the day immensely, against very strong opposition, and are looking forward to next year. Angela Wooldridge, Club Coach, and Peter Prynne assisted during the games. One thing is for certain seeing people from a wide range of disabilities, enjoying themselves, was quite heartening.
