Bowls and Cornwall School Games

2015CSG Bowls WinnersBowls and the Sainsbury’s Cornwall School Games make the perfect match!

More than 100 young people took part in the Bowls finals of the Sainsbury’s Cornwall School Games at the end of June at St Austell Bowls Club.

The 2015 Sainsbury’s Cornwall School Games was the inaugural year for Bowls to be involved and what a success it was.   A partnership between The Cornwall Bowls Alliance and Cornwall Sports Partnership ensured the day was a success and we think this is the first time Bowls has been involved in the games in this country.

After a whole year of practicing with local clubs 15 Primary schools came together with over 3,000 other competitors for the Opening Ceremony at Poltair School.

As school teams prepared to disperse to venues in and around the area, including the Bowls at St Austell Bowls Club, athletics star and Sporting Champion Craig Pickering provided the inspiration and later commented “What a fabulous event, it is so important that these kind of opportunities exist for young people of all abilities to engage with sport in this way. The chance to experience a large scale multi-sport event like this is unique and can be really inspirational in all kinds of ways

Rachel Knott lead organiser for the event at the Cornwall Sports Partnership added

“This is Cornwall’s biggest annual sporting event and it is great to see Bowls a part of it with 15 schools getting involved. The exciting bit is where they have made partnerships with local clubs to make sure they have the opportunity to continue to participate locally to where they live and a big thanks has to go to all the volunteers that made it such a success!”

Plans are already underway for the 2016 Cornwall School Games and it is hoped that Bowls will go from strength to strength with more schools getting involved. For furtherinformation about how schools can become involved, go to:
