For the past five years St. Columb & District Bowling Club have invited year six children from St. Columb Major Academy to come and learn about our sport for approximately one afternoon a week towards the end of their summer term.
When we first started this venture we were grateful to Cornwall’s Coaching Team for their help and guidance. In subsequent years our own Club members and our coaches have taken over this role and accompanied by some of the school teaching staff we have been able to introduce hundreds of children to the game of bowls. Some with much success – even to County level – and others with a great deal of laughter and enjoyment. This is surely a major bonus in any sport as it makes it possible for all levels of achievement to be recognised.
This year we took this one step forward as we were invited to play against another school. This was St. Breok Primary School who have been learning their skills with Wadebridge Bowling Club. Twelve children from each school met on 22nd July 2015 and played twelve ends of bowls. We were very lucky as the weather was lovely and the children really enjoyed the challenge of such a game. The adults involved from both Clubs were extremely helpful and perhaps equally as competitive as the children. It was a very close match with St. Columb managing to win by a small margin.
As a Club and in conjunction with local schools we would strongly recommend that other Bowling Clubs consider this as a way forward to introducing younger members to our sport.
